James T. Hubbel
Julian, California

Donated by Pacific Rim Park Inc.

Location: Shoreline Park, Shelter Island, San Diego

Architectural students from San Diego and sister cities Vladivostok, Tijuana and Yantai, China, assisted artist and designer James T. Hubbell in creating this dramatic fountain, which is the center piece of Pacific Rim Park at the southern end of Shelter Island. Made of formed and poured concrete, this representation of a pearl fountain and Chinese fans includes columns topped with ironwork suggestive of Russian calligraphy. A beautiful mosaic design surrounding the fountain depicts the cardinal points of the compass and includes directions to San Diego's other sister cities of the Pacific Rim. The park and sculpture are the "third pearl" in a necklace of Pacific Rim parks being created to commemorate the friendship, cultural links, and economic ties that we share with our Pacific neighbors.
