2011 marked Harbor Island’s 40th year of providing business, pleasure and recreation, as one of San Diego Bay's most prominent waterfront areas. In 1961, Harbor Island was shaped with dredged materials from the bottom of San Diego Bay after the Navy deepened the channel in order to accommodate larger naval supercarriers. Today, Harbor Island is a pleasant, park-like waterfront getaway close to San Diego’s downtown, airport and cruise ship terminals. Locals love the island for its hotel and restaurant offering and its majestic Bay views spanning from the downtown skyline to impressive military ships to the Point Loma peninsula.
