San Diego Bay is a natural harbor north of downtown San Diego and adjacent to the San Diego International Airport. The bay is bordered by the cities of San Diego, National City, Coronado, Chula Vista, and Imperial Beach. The west side of the Bay and the Pacific Ocean are separated by a long, narrow strip of land commonly called the Silver Strand. The Port of San Diego, created in 1962, manages the harbor and administers the public lands adjacent to the bay. The San Diego Harbor Police Department has patrols the Big Bay as well as the surrounding areas, including the airport.
