This is the fifth year of the Port of San Diego's public art project titled "Urban Trees." The popular exhibit, located along the waterfront of the North Embarcadero, features the sculptures of 31 artists. The sculptures represent the artists' visions of what an urban tree should be.
Ramble On by Joey VaiasusoThe diverse artworks range from designs symbolizing the San Diego lifestyle, to more abstract artworks that leave the viewer guessing. Standouts include Michael L. Barrows sculpture, "Riskworks: Break-Dancers," depicting a dancer memorializing the urban street dancing that was prevalent during the 80s. In addition, Mike Thorton's artwork, "His Tree of Surfboards," which epitomizes our region's surf culture and Joey Vaiasuso's sculpture, "Ramble On," which includes an eight-foot tall pair of abstract legs sculpted from bronze are sure to be attention getters.
Many of the artists will be on site to answer questions at the August 2 dedication. The event will feature entertainment, refreshments and the "Urban Trees Challenge" contest where participants can win prizes for answering questions related to the Urban Trees 5 artworks.
The Port's Public Art Program was created in 1996 to promote a healthy, vibrant atmosphere that contributes to the quality and identity of the region. The Port enacted the first "percent for art" program in San Diego County, dedicating one half of one percent of its projected revenues each year toward a public art fund that is used for the acquisition and maintenance of public artworks on Port tidelands.
